Claregalway's Townlands

An baile fearainn, the Irish meaning of townland or ploughland, ‘quarter’ of land, are the one of the smallest land divisions in Ireland. Claregalway has 29 official townlands all representing the built or natural description of the land in that area. Mostly of Irish Gaelic origin, in some parts of Ulster, townlands were known as "ballyboes" (Irish: baile bó, meaning "cow land"), and represented an area of pastoral economic value.
